Sea-ice covers seven per cent of the world's oceans, and is mostly found in the polar regions. This ice formation is usually seasonal, but in very cold places such as the Weddell Sea in Antarctica, the ice can last two, three or more summers. When this occurs, pancake ice forms. These are large, rounded areas of ice that can range from 30 cm (1 ft) to 3 m (10 ft) in diameter and may grow up to 10 cm (4 in) thick. The pancakes have raised edges due to the their bumping into each other.
