Completed on 4 July 2012, the Three Gorges Dam project in Yiling District, Hubei province, China, has a total installed generation capacity of 22,500 MegaWatts (MW) – the largest generation capacity in the world today. The hydroelectric-generation station on the Yangtze River comprises 32 main turbines, each capable of 700-MW-generation capacity, and two smaller 50-MW generators that are used to provide power for the plant facility. The generators are spread out over the dam, with 14 being installed on the north side, 12 on the south side and six operating in an underground facilty in the mountain side south of the dam. Each of the main generators weighs 6,000 tonnes.
