The propeller-driven 'Rail Zeppelin' built by the German engineer Franz Kruckenberg reached a speed of 230 km/h (143 mph) during a test run on 21 June 1931 between Hamburg and Berlin, Germany. The vehicle received its nickname because of the large propeller mounted behind the passenger compartment and its lightweight steel and canvas construction. It was powered by a 433 kW (580 hp) BMW aircraft engine but never entered regular service.
