The largest diameter for any star in our galaxy discovered to date is in excess of 1.5 billion km (900 million miles). Astronomers have indentified three stars of this size in an international study of red supergiants. These stars, KW Sagitarii, V354 Cephei and KY Cygni, are at distances of 9,800 light-years, 9,000 light-years and 5,200 light years from Earth respectively. These results were announced in January 2005.
If any of these stars were located in the centre of our Solar System, they would reach beyond the orbit of Jupiter in extent.
