The largest bulk carriers are the 68 ships of the Vale-class (also known as "Valemax" ships), commissioned by Brazilian mining company Vale between 2011 and the present day. These massive cargo ships have a length overall of 362 m, are 65 m wide and have a deadweight tonnage of 400,000. The lead ship of the class, the Ore Brasil (formerly the Vale Brasil) was delivered on 30 March 2011.
These ships were commissioned to carry massive quantities of iron ore from Vale's port facilities in Brazil to industrial customers in Europe, North America and Asia. Deadweight tonnage is a measure of the cargo carrying capacity of a ship, used most often when describing dry bulk carriers and oil tankers. It is the weight of the cargo when the ship is fully loaded in long tons (2,240 lb; 1,016 kg).
