Located in Sihwa Lake, South Korea, the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station opened on 4 August 2011. Making use of a seawall defence constructed in 1994 for flood management, the tidal barrage uses ten 25.4 MW submerged turbines that give the power station a total output capacity of 254 MW. Power is generated on in-flow to the basin lake only, with out-flow on low tide being let out to sea. The reason for this rather unusual waste of potential energy is to balance the land use for agriculture, water use and environmental considerations, including conservation. The tidal barrage power plant cost $335M to build.
