The Tarantula Nebula in the constellation of Doradus, in the southern sky, is large and bright enough to be visible to the naked eye, despite being at a distance of 170,000 light years. The huge cloud of glowing gas has a diameter of around 1,000 light years and is the only nebula outside our galaxy that is visible to the naked eye.
The Tarantula Nebula is part of the Large Magellanic Cloud – a dwarf satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way.
