Observations made in 1970 of the molecular nebula Sagittarius B2, close to the centre of our galaxy, revealed vast quantities of methanol molecules. This was followed by the discovery of ethanol in 1975. If this tenuous gaseous alcohol could be condensed into a liquid, a billion billion billion-litre (10**27) container would be necessary to hold it. As the nebula is 150 light years across, a volume of the gas the size of the Earth would be required to make one glass of wine.
