The largest area of open sea surrounded by pack ice in recorded history measured around 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) by 350 kilometres (220 miles). It occurred in the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica, during the winter months of 1974, 1975 and 1976. It was discovered using satellite imagery.
