Wondolowski retired at the end of the 2021 MLS regular season, having scored his 171st regular-season goal in his final game, a 1–1 draw between the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas. He surpassed Landon Donovan’s record of 145 MLS goals with a four-goal blitz against the Chicago Fire on 18 May 2019.
