The greatest vertical distance covered in a non-racing wheelchair in eight hours (female) is 1,090 m (3,576 ft), achieved by Lexi Alyx Chambers (UK) on Alpe d'Huez in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, on 23 July 2026.
Lexi Chambers, who has complex regional pain syndrome and fibromyalgia, the former of which resulted in her left leg being amputated, has previously worked as a nurse for the NHS and is also a British Army veteran.
The endurance athlete started her ascent at the base of Alpe d'Huez – a famous mountain section of the annual Tour de France cycling race best-known for its steep gradients and 21 hairpin switchbacks – in Bourg d'Oisans and finished at the summit on Avenue du Rif Nel.
In total, Chambers covered a distance of 13.86 km (8.6 mi) in just under six hours (with a moving time of 4 hr 25 min), meaning she finished well before the time limit of eight hours for this record category.
Chambers has set a number of endurance records, including the fastest John-O'-Groats/Land’s End crossing by wheelchair (female): 44 days 1 hr 43 min, from 27 August to 10 October 2024. All of her records are executed using a non-sport wheelchair as she is passionate about showing other wheelchair users what is possible with everyday equipment.
