'Blu-ray', the new format for dvds, uses a blue laser, instead of the traditional red laser seen in current cd and dvd players. The blue laser allows 27 gigabytes of data to be stored on a single-layer, single side of a dvd disc. This new format was jointly established by nine of the largest electronics companies, and announced in February 2002. Dvd players which can take advantage of this leap in storage capability are now under development.
