APS-1 in Obninsk, USSR, was the world's first civil nuclear power station. Construction started on 1 January 1951 and the first connection to the USSR's national grid was on 26 June 1954. APS-1 was the only nuclear power station in the USSR for four years, and remained operational until 29 April 2002, when it finally closed. The 51-year span of continual power output makes this the longest operational period of any nuclear power station.
