A tornado with a diameter of 4.18 km (2.59 miles) was measured using Doppler radar by the US National Weather Service on 31 May 2013 in El Reno, Oklahoma, USA.

Three experienced storm-chasers, Tim Samaras, his son Paul and Carl Young became the first professional researchers ever to be killed directly in the pursuit of extreme weather.

Consultant Dave Hawksett confirms that this has been measured as per previous record holder: "it was measured using DOW like the previous holder, who would have released data on its size using the same conventions as the previous holder."
