In December 2002, US scientists announced their discovery of a fresh crater on the Moon. The 2km-wide (1.2 miles) crater is in the same location as a bright flash, photographed in 1953 by amateur astronomer Leon Stuart (USA). This is the only lunar crater known to have been formed in modern times.
The asteroid that caused this crater would have been around 300m (980 ft) across and would have detonated on impact with a force around 35 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.
