According to a 2021 report published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), there are an estimated 104,000 museums around the world. If excluding microstates (those with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants, which tend to skew large-scale population-based data), the country with the most museums per capita is Sweden with a total of 1,600 museums and a population of 10.6 million (as of 2025), equating to 151 museums for every million citizens.
Overall the country with the most museums according to the same dataset is the USA, with 33,082, which works out to just under one-third of the global total. Per capita, it is ranked more midtable with around 100 museums per million citizens.
If not excluding microstates, the record would go to the Pacific island nation of Niue, which despite only having one museum, statistically works out as having a ratio of c. 625 museums per citizen when extrapolated to museums per million people, owing to its tiny sub-2,000 population.
