The oldest alpaca in captivity ever is Hawthornden Wainui (New Zealand, b. 2 January 1998), who was 27 years and 267 days old, as verified in Wainuiomata, New Zealand, on 26 September 2025.

The average lifespan for an alpaca is anywhere between 15-20 years and surprisingly enough, this alpaca lived for almost 28!

According to his owners, Vicki & Alex Cordier- Hawthornden Wainui was said to have lived a very pampered life. He starts his day with a big breakfast and then wanders off until he's hungry for another meal. He spends most of his days like this- just chilling- which is said to be the secret to his longevity.

Hawthornden is even said to be friends with a goat named Barney and Squeak- a sheep. This fascinating alpaca is also known to be quite fashionable, wearing winter coats/jumpers to stay warm.
