At the conclusion of the dramatic 2025 Test series between England and India, a total of 7,187 runs had been scored by the two teams combined – 3,378 for England and 3,809 for India. Visiting captain Shubman Gill (754) was the series’ leading run-scorer, followed by Joe Root (537), KL Rahul (532) and Ravindra Jadeja (516). It was England who posted the highest team score of the series (669 in the drawn Fourth Test at Old Trafford), while India amassed 587 on their way to winning the Second Test at Edgbaston.
The 1993 Ashes series in England produced more runs – 7,221 – but was contested over six matches. England and India’s 7,187 runs in 2025, featuring 21 individual centuries, beat a five-match-series record that had stood for 96 years, when England defeated hosts Australia 4-1 in a 6,826-run series in 1928-29. For only the second time in any five-match Test series in the past 20 years, play extended to the fifth day of every match, with the series boiling down to the final morning of the Fifth Day at The Oval, when the sell-out crowd witnessed England’s Chris Woakes walking out to bat at No.11 with his left arm in a sling after suffering a dislocated shoulder earlier in the match. Mohammed Siraj’s 5 for 104 and Prasidh Krishna’s 4 for 126 proved decisive in the end as the hosts collapsed from 301 for 3 to 367 all out. India won the ill-tempered encounter by six runs – their narrowest margin of victory in 183 Tests won – to square the series 2-2.
