Tony Christie (UK, b. Anthony Fitzgerald, 25 April 1943) was 61 years 349 days old on 9 April 2005, when the charity single “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo” was joined at the top of the UK’s two flagship music charts for a second week by the singer’s Definitive Collection album (2005).
Two weeks earlier, Christie had completed the longest wait for a UK No.1 single from chart debut – 34 years 76 days – when the charity release “Amarillo” debuted at the top of the chart with help from comedian Peter Kay.
“Amarillo” spent seven consecutive weeks at the top, allowing Definitive Collection – featuring “Amarillo”, “Avenues and Alleyways”, “I Did What I Did for Maria” and his UK singles chart debut, “Las Vegas” – time to climb to No.1 on the Official Albums Chart on 2 April, having debuted at No.10 on 5 March 2005. It remained at No.1 on 9 April.
Madonna (b. 16 August 1958) is the oldest female artist to reach No.1 on both charts simultaneously, doing so at the age of 49 years 268 days on 10 May 2008 with “4 Minutes” (feat. Justin Timberlake) and Hard Candy (2008).
