The oldest person to be elected as their country's President was Beji Caid Essebsi (b. 29 November 1926), who became the fifth President of Tunisia on 31 December 2014 at the age of 88 years 32 days. He served until his death on 25 July 2019, five months short of completing his full term.

Essebsi – the first freely elected president of modern Tunisia – died at the age of 92, having earlier announced that he would not stand for re-election at the end of his term.

By comparison, Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden Jr (b. 20 November 1942) was inaugurated as President of the USA on 20 January 2021, aged 78 years 61 days. President-Elect Donald Trump (b. 14 June 1946) was aged 78 years 220 days at his inauguration on 20 January 2025.
