Although not marketed as a science fiction film, Everything Everywhere All At Once (USA, 2022) contains many science fiction themes and has been often described as sci fi by critics and movie databases. The film, written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, won Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards on 12 March 2023.
The Academy's apparent dislike of genres such as horror and science fiction – which have received just 1.1% and 4% of all nominations respectively – mean that producers often downplay their projects' links to these genres. For example, despite featuring plenty of gruesome deaths and jump-scares, Jaws was never classified as a horror movie. As such, despite being a story about a woman jumping between parallel universes to stop a villain from destroying the multiverse with a toroid singularity, Everything Everywhere All At Once is typically billed as a comedy-drama.
