Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (Ninja Theory, 2017) tells the story of an 8th century Pict woman called Senua, who has psychosis. The condition is shown in the game through auditory and visual hallucinations, overwhelming pattern recognition, and delusions, and the developers at Ninja Theory worked closely with mental health clinicians, including Paul Fletcher, Professor of Health Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. As Senua travels to the secret entrance to Helheim during the opening cutscene, Fletcher's name and role as Mental Health Advisor is the very first that appears in the credits.

In addition to consulting with mental health clinicians, Ninja Theory consulted with people with psychosis to try to make the game's portrayal of the illness as genuine as possible. The audio design was particularly praised, as the sound team recorded an ensemble cast to create auditory hallucinations. The recordings used binaural audio in headphones that could make individual voices seem close, far away, or as if they were coming from a specific direction.
