The most short track speed skating Olympic gold medals won by an individual male is six by Viktor Ahn (South Korea/Russia), who won three gold medals for South Korea at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and three gold medals for Russia at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from 15 to 21 February 2014. Viktor Ahn born Ahn Hyun-Soo has also made history by winning gold medals for two distinct countries. Having represented South Korea at the 2006 games, a fall-out with the national federation after the 2006 World Championships severely damaged the skater's relationship with the governing body. Although he would go on to compete for South Korea in the 2007 World Championships, he missed out on the 2009 Worlds and 2010 Olympics due to injury.

Ahn took up Russian citizenship in time for the Sochi Olympics, where he continued his skating success under a different flag. Ahn's gold medals have come in the 500 m, 1,500 m, and twice in 5,000-m relay and 1,000 m.
