The largest purpose-built recording studio is Studio One at Abbey Road Studios in London, UK. This carefully designed acoustic space has a floor area of 450 m2 (4,844 sq ft) and 12.2-m-high (40 ft) ceilings. It was designed to be large enough to accommodate a full symphony orchestra and choir, and has been used for countless classical music recordings as well as many famous film and videogame scores. The studio was built by the Gramophone Company (later EMI) between 1929 and 1931, and officially opened by Edward Elgar on 12 November 1931.

There are other very large recording studios in the world, used for recording classical pieces and film scores, however these are typically converted churches or theatres. Teldex Studio Berlin, for example, also has a floor area of 450 m2 (though slightly lower ceilings), but it was converted from a 19th century dance hall.
