The most prolific folk-song collector was Alan Lomax (USA), who recorded more than 17,000 traditional songs over the course of his career.

Lomax, who made his first field recordings in 1934 while assisting his father, the musicologist John Lomax, travelled the world in search of musical traditions that were fading with the rise of radio and television. Notable recording expeditions include the United States (1934-1948), Haiti (1936-37, 1962), Ireland (1951-53), the UK (1951-58), Italy (1954-55) and Spain (1952-53).
