The oldest competitor at the Winter Olympic Games is Carl August Kronlund (Sweden, b. 25 August 1865), who participated in the curling aged 58 years 156 days at the 1924 Winter Olympics on 28 January 1924 in Chamonix, France.
The International Olympic Committee ruled in February 2006 that the 1924 curling event had been part of the official programme, not a demonstration event, as had been widely believed previously. (Curling would not become an official Winter Olympic medal event again until Nagano 1998.) Only three teams participated in the 1924 event – Sweden, Great Britain and France. Kronlund played in Sweden’s 18–10 defeat of France on 28 January and finished with a silver medal – making him also the oldest Winter Olympic medallist.
