The worst air disaster in terms of the number of ground casualties was the  terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, USA on 11 September 2001 when, according to the official death toll from the authorities, 2,666 people lost their lives. The total number of people killed aboard the two aircraft was 157.

An American Airline's 767 (Flight 11) was flown into the North Tower at 8.48 a.m. and the second hijacked 767, United Airlines flight 175, hit the South Tower at 9.03 a.m.

The South Tower collapsed first at 9.50 a.m. and the North Tower collapsed at 10.29 a.m.

In addition, on the same day a hijacked aircraft was crashed into the Pentagon, Washington DC with the loss of 189 lives and another hijacked plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania with the loss of 44 lives.
