John Lasseter’s computer-animated Tin Toy (USA, 1988) was named the Best Short Film (Animated) at the 61st Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 29 March 1989.

The short film depicts a one-man band toy called Tinny trying to escape from Billy, a heavy-handed baby. This was Pixar’s first win at the Academy Awards.

The first animated film to win an Oscar was the eight-minute “Silly Symphonies” cartoon Flowers and Trees, which won Walt Disney (USA) an Oscar for Best Short Subject (Cartoons) at the 5th Academy Awards on 18 November 1932; the category was introduced that year.
