The longest-running board game award is the Spiel des Jahres ("Game of the Year"), which has been awarded annually since 1979 by the German non-profit foundation of the same name. Past winners include titles that have gone on to become internationally famous such as Catan (1995), Carcassonne (2001) and Ticket to Ride (2004).

The Origins Awards, organized by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design in the USA, was started as an annual award in 1975, but was not held in 2019, 2021, or 2024. Another wargaming-focused award, the Charles S. Roberts Award, was awarded from 1974 to 2012, and restarted in 2019.
