On 26 February 2025, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran made 177 off 146 balls – including six sixes and 12 fours – in an ICC Champions Trophy group match against England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan.

At the same venue four days earlier, England’s Ben Duckett had scored a then-record 165 off 143 balls against Australia, in a match that set new records for the competition’s highest team score (Australia’s 356 for 5), highest successful run chase in an ICC One-Day International tournament and highest aggregate score (707; England 351 for 8).

The 2025 tournament efforts of Zadran and Duckett usurped Andy Flower’s 145 for Zimbabwe against India on 14 September 2002, later matched by Nathan Astle’s 145 not out for New Zealand against the USA on 10 September 2004.

Nine editions of the 50-over ICC Champions Trophy – a fundraiser for the development of cricket in non-Test-playing countries – have been staged since 1998. Australia (2006 and 2009) and India (2002 – tie with Sri Lanka – and 2013) have two wins apiece; South Africa (1998), New Zealand (2000) and official hosts Pakistan (2017) began the 2025 tournament hoping to join them on two titles. Sri Lanka (2002) and the West Indies (2004) did not qualify for the latest edition of the ICC Champions Trophy.
