In April 2001, Virgin/EMI paid Mariah Carey (USA) a $21 million (£14.73 million) signing bonus when she agreed to a four-album deal reported to be worth between $80-$100 million (£56.12-£70.15 million). At the time Virgin claimed she was "The Biggest Selling Female artist of all time" with sales of over 150 million world-wide. She had previously scored 15 US No. 1 singles and spent longer in the US No.1 position (61 weeks) than any other female. In January 2002, after only releasing one album, Glitter, EMI paid her $29 million (£20.34 million) to end the deal.
