The oldest national weather service is the Central Institution for Meteorology and Geodynamics (Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik, or ZAMG), which was founded on 23 July 1851. Its first director was University of Vienna professor Karl Kreil, who oversaw the creation of a network of meteorological observatories that spanned the Austrian Empire (which then covered most of central Europe and the Balkans).
