Traditionally a male-dominated category since it was first presented at the Grammy Awards in 1992, three female artists have won a pair of Best Rock Song statuettes: Alanis Morissette (Canada/USA; for “You Oughta Know” in 1996 and “Uninvited” in 1999), Brittany Howard (USA; for “Don’t Wanna Fight” with Alabama Shakes in 2016 and “Stay High” as a solo artist in 2021) and St Vincent (USA, b. Annie Clark; for “Masseduction” in 2019 and “Broken Man” in 2025).
In 2025, St Vincent took home three Grammy awards: Best Alternative Music Album (for All Born Screaming) and Best Alternative Music Performance (for “Flea”, the second single from All Born Screaming) in addition to Best Rock Song for “Broken Man” (the album’s lead single).
Howard and St Vincent were among the performers who teamed up for a poignant tribute to Los Angeles – after the wildfires that had torn through southern California in January 2025 – at the start of the 67th Grammy Awards.
Bruce Springsteen (1995, 2003 and 2008–09) and Nirvana/Foo Fighters members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear (2012, 2014, 2018 and 2022) are all four-time winners of Best Rock Song, with the prize going to the songwriter(s).
