Oldest weather station

The oldest operational weather station is maintained by Uppsala University in Sweden (station number 02462 in the World Meteorological Organization database). The first meteorological observations on record date from 1 January 1722, and were carried out by Professor Erik Burman and his young assistant, Anders Celsius. Although there are some gaps in the surviving records between 1722 and 1773, its logs cover 303 years 29 days of Swedish climate history as of 30 January 2025.

This record is based on information gathered as part of the WMO's "Centennial Station" initiative, which recognizes weather stations that have been operational for more than 100 years. To qualify for recognition, the observing station must have continuous records of observations, and gaps in its records/periods of inactivity cannot add up to more than 10% of time since its founding. They can have been moved, but not to a location that significantly changes the data collected.
