Gaël Monfils (France, b. 1 September 1986) was 38 years 132 days old when he won the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, on 11 January 2025. Monfils beat Zizou Bergs 6–3, 6–4 in the final to claim his 13th ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour title and secure a record previously held by tennis great Roger Federer, who won his 10th Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel – and what would be his 103rd and final ATP Tour singles title – on 27 October 2019 when he was 38 years 80 days old.
Ricardo “Pancho” González (b. 9 May 1928) was approaching his 44th birthday when he won the Des Moines International pro tournament in February 1972, and Ken Rosewall (b. 2 November 1934) had just turned 43 when he lifted the trophy at the Hong Kong Classic in November 1977, but their success was well before the ATP Tour was established in 1990.
Ranked 52nd in the world (as of January 2025), Monfils is the oldest Top 100 singles player in the history of the ATP Tour. Arguably, his most notable achievements on a tennis court – at least before the 2025 ASB Classic – were his semi-final appearances at the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016 – the same year he secured his best-ever ATP singles ranking of No.6.
