It is difficult to say exactly which airport is the most centrally located, given the challenges in defining a what a "city" is, as well as the fact that most cities don't really have a precisely defined "centre". Using the European Commission definition of a city, which requires a settlement to have at least 50,000 inhabitants, the strongest candidate is San Diego International Airport in California, USA. The airport perimeter is just 1,705 m (5,594 ft; 1.06 mi) from Civic Center Plaza in downtown San Diego. If a broader definition is used, then the title likely goes to Gibraltar Airport in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar (population 32,688). This airport, whose runway is crossed by the main road into the territory, is 1,161 m (3,809 ft; 0.72 mi) from the Gibraltar Parliament Building on John Mackintosh Square.

Other notable examples of airports right in the heart of cities include Billy Bishop Toronto Airport in Canada – which is located on an island just off the city's waterfront around 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the intersection of Yonge and Queen Streets – and Tallinn Airport in Estonia – which is 3.7 km (2.3 mi) from the city's historic central square.
