When Shohei Ohtani (Japan) hit his 40th home run and stole his 40th base of the season while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers (USA) on 23 August 2024, he reached the 40-40 mark faster than anyone else in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Ohtani achieved this feat in his 126th game of the season, surpassing the previous mark of 147 (set by Alfonso Soriano of the Washington Nationals in 2006) by 21 games.
By season’s end, Ohtani would become the first player in MLB history to achieve a 50/50 season, with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases.
