On his One-Day International (ODI) debut for Scotland on 22 July 2024, playing in a Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match against Oman at Forthill in Dundee, UK, Charlie Cassell (UK) took seven wickets for 21 runs to become the only bowler to date to bag a seven-for in his first ODI match. The paceman began his devastating 5.4-over spell with three wickets in his first four deliveries, and the Player of the Match wrapped up the visitors’ innings on 91. Scotland (95 for 2) knocked off the runs in just 17.2 of their allotted 50 overs.

Playing on his home ground in Broughty Ferry, Forfarshire Cricket Club all-rounder Cassell went one better than the two men who had previously taken six wickets on their ODI debut: West Indies’ Fidel Edwards (6 for 22 against Zimbabwe on 29 November 2003) and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada (6 for 16 against Bangladesh on 10 July 2015).

The women’s ODI record has stood since 23 June 1973, when Glenys Page of New Zealand took 6 for 20 against Trinidad & Tobago in the fourth match of the inaugural Women’s Cricket World Cup.

As of 28 November 2024, Cassell was one of 15 men to take seven wickets in the 4,812 ODIs played; only one has managed eight: Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas, whose 8 for 19 destroyed Zimbabwe on 8 December 2001.
