In an extraordinary Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on 15 April 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad (287 for 3) stunned Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB; 262 for 7) as 549 runs were clobbered to all parts of the ground in the 20-overs-per-side contest. Highlights included Travis Head’s 102 for Sunrisers, whose 287 for 3 was the highest team score in the IPL, and cameos from RCB skipper Faf du Plessis (a 28-ball 62) and middle-order batter Dinesh Karthik (a 35-ball 83) that took the hosts to within touching distance of an improbable victory target of 288.
RCB’s 262 for 7 was, at the time, the fifth-highest team score in the IPL (and the seventh-highest at the end of the 2024 tournament). The 549 runs in Bengaluru produced the highest match aggregate in any senior men’s or women’s T20 match, relegating the 523 runs hit by Sunrisers (277 for 3) and Mumbai Indians (246 for 5) – also at the same edition of the IPL – on 27 March 2024. This was later equalled by Kolkata Knight Riders (261 for 6) and Punjab Kings (262 for 2) on 26 April 2024 – again at the run-heavy 17th staging of the IPL.
