Scientists believe the hyena is the only wild animal which is naturally immune to rabies. Researchers studied several hundred hyenas in the Serengeti for up to 13 years. Hyenas seem to be able to carry the virus without displaying any of the usual symptoms associated with it, i.e hyperactivity, paralysis and death.
The scientists were from Germany and Tanzania, led by Marion East at the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Berlin.
