In 2026, the Estadio Azteca became the first stadium to host games at three different World Cup tournaments. It witnessed 10 games in 1970 and nine in 1986 – including both finals – and a further five in 2026. The Estadio Azteca was the setting for classic ties such as Italy’s 4–3 win over West Germany in the 1970 semi-final, dubbed the “Game of the Century”, and Argentina’s 2–1 win over England in the 1986 quarter-final – where Diego Maradona scored his “Hand of God” goal, and also with a spectacular dribble later voted FIFA’s Goal of the Century.
