“Why Me?” by Linda Martin (1992), “In Your Eyes” by Niamh Kavanagh (1993) and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids” by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan (1994) gave Ireland three consecutive Eurovision Song Contest victories in the 1990s – a feat not achieved by any other country since the event began in 1956.

Spain (1968–69, the latter in a tie with three other countries), Luxembourg (1972–73) and Israel (1978–79) are the only examples (other than Ireland) of a country winning back-to-back contests. Ireland also won Eurovision in 1996 with Eimear Quinn’s “The Voice”, making it four wins in five years for the Emerald Isle.

As of 2024, Ireland (1970, 1980, 1987, 1992–94 and 1996) and Sweden (1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015 and 2023) had jointly won more editions of the Eurovision Song Contest than any other nation – seven.

Incidentally, two individuals – Netherlands’ Corry Brokken in 1958 and Germany’s Lena in 2011, who finished equal ninth (last) and 10th, respectively – have tried to defend a Eurovision win without success.
