A 3-D map of Earth, covering 80% of the world's land masses, has been compiled by NASA using data collected during the 11-day STS-99 mission of the space shuttle Endeavour. Using two large radar antennae, one in the cargo bay and another on a 60 m (197 ft) mast, the shuttle crew collected eight terabytes of precise topographical data on Earth's physical geography, with a horizontal resolution of 10 m (33 ft) and a vertical resolution of 10 m. NASA began releasing the map in August 2001.
8 terabytes is roughly equivalent to 160 million pages of text.
STS-99 was launched on 11 Feb 2000 and landed on 22 Feb 2000.
