The trio swam a distance of c. 24 km (15 mi) from Cape Ngombo (Makanjila) to Senga Bay. They were piloted by Gideon Duncan and observed by Walter Muggleton.

The first documented swim across Lake Malawi was completed in tandem by Lewis Pugh and Otto Thaning (both South Africa) on 5 January 1992.

The fastest stage swim of the length of Lake Malawi – a 580-km-long (360-mi) crossing between Matema (the most northern point of the lake in Tanzania) and ending at Mponda in Mangochi District, Malawi – is 63 days, achieved by Martin Hobbs (South Africa) between 20 February and 24 April 2019. His actual swim time was 54 days but Hobbs was prevented from swimming for several days for various reasons including unsafe weather, illness and immigration logistics.
