The first triple amputee to sail solo across the Pacific Ocean (and indeed any ocean) is Craig Wood (UK), who travelled west across the Pacific from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, to Hiroshima, Japan, between 25 March and 24 June 2025. The journey, which was completed in his 41-ft catamaran Sirius II, covered 7,506 nautical miles (13,901 km; 8,638 mi) and lasted 90 days, with an average speed of 3.6 knots (6.6 km/h; 4.1 mph).
British Army veteran Craig lost both his legs and his left hand as the result of an IED explosion in Afghanistan, during his first tour of duty, aged 18. After his recovery, he returned to a pastime he learned from his father: sailing. He currently lives on board Sirius II, along with his wife and three children.
For the trip, the vessel was packed with 10 kg (22 lb) of rice, 50 packs of spaghetti,100 tins of beans and 50 tins each of tuna, chicken and Spam, as well as fresh produce, nuts and seeds, 20 jars of peanut butter, and snacks such as protein bars and rice crackers.
On arriving in Hiroshima after his 90-day odyssey, Craig said: “I’m exhausted – but so proud to complete an expedition that many thought impossible.”
As well as demonstrating the potential for unprecedented feats in the field of adaptive adventure, Craig also raised funds for two charities: Blesma (which supports veterans who have lost limbs) and Turn to Starboard (which works with members of the military to help them readjust to civilian life).
