According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the country that produces the most bananas is India, with 34,528,000 tonnes grown in 2022 - equivalent to 25.51% of global output.
In 2022, annual global banana output reached 135.11 million tonnes. In terms of absolute tonnage, India is ahead of China (11.77 million tonnes), Indonesia (9.24 million tonnes) and Nigeria (8.01 million tonnes), although on a per-head-of-population basis, the largest producer is the Caribbean nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (population: 104,000), where more than 555 kg (1,2243 lb) of bananas are grown for every person (c. 4,700 bananas each!); Costa Rica, with a population of 5.18 million, is second on the list, with 487 kg (1,073 lb) per capita.
