The East African Rift System is approximately 4,400 km (2,730 miles) long with an average width of 50–65 kilometres (30–40 miles). The escarpments around the edge of the valley have an average height of 600–900 metres (2,000–3,000 feet). It begins in the vicinity of the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Djibouti and extends south to Mozambique in eastern Africa. This extensive rift system has been gradually forming for around 30 million years, as the Arabian peninsula has separated from Africa.
