The most expensive coffee in the world is Kopi Luwak coffee which sells for approximately £215 ($300) per pound (0.45 kg). This is partly due to the fact that there is only 500 lb (227 kg) of it available every year. However the price also reflects the manner in which it is processed. The beans are collected from the excrement of the Sumatran civet cat (Paradoxurus) which lives in the mountain ranges of the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya. The civet climbs into the coffee trees and eats the ripest coffee cherries it can find. Eventually these are digested and reappear in the animal's excrement where they are gathered by locals. The coffee that comes from these beans is supposed to have an earthy, pungent odour with a chocolaty, syrupy flavour.
