Chindogu comes from the Japanese for 'weird tool' and has been popularised by Kenji Kawakami. It is the art of inventions which, at first sight, appear to be useful but reveal there utter uselessness upon closer inspection. Kawakami has published two books containing Chindogu inventions - 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions followed by 99 More Unuseless Japanese Inventions. Examples include tiny dusters that slip onto a cat's paws, enabling it to clean dusty surfaces as it walks around! Kenji Kawakami has popularised the concept of Chindogu, which he defines as "inventions that seem like they're going to make life a lot easier, but don't".
