The very centre of the Sun is the hottest place in the Solar System. The latest estimates of the temperature are 15,600,000 C (28,080,000 F). The pressure in the core is also immense, around 250 billion times the pressure at sea level on Earth. It is here that around 600 million tonnes of hydrogen are fused into helium every second. This ongoing nuclear reaction is what makes the Sun shine.
